April 2012

The First of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year. Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed. (Mark Twain)

The 15th of April is the day that I, along with a number of other fools, have to send way too much money to the US Government.

And the 25th of April is ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand, and a number of other places in that part of the world..  I once had the honor of spending ANZAC Day in the Fortune of War

Out With The Old

I’ve had season tickets to George Mason University basketball games since the Patriot Center  opened it’s doors in 1985.  Back then, Navy was still a member of the CAA and had a guy on their team named David Robinson .  The CAA Championship Tournament for the 1985-1986 season was held at the Patriot Center with Navy  winning over GMU in the championship game.  This was the one and only time the Patriot Center has hosted the CAA Championship Tournament.  I was there and so was the scoreboard in the picture.

After over 25 years of faithful service, the scoreboard has retired.  Its successor is this rookie that first saw action at the George Mason versus Old Dominion game on 4 February 2012.  It gave a solid performance, with the exception of occasionally getting confused over the foul count per player as GMU defeated ODU 54-50 to retain a share of first place in the CAA.

Groundhog Day 2012

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today, so we get to enjoy six more weeks of winter weather.  Based on the exceedingly mild winter weather we’ve been experiencing here to date, six more weeks of days like today (sunny, 60° F, 15.5° C) is fine with me.

Stop SOPA and PIPA

This site has not gone dark today, but our mothership has in support of those whose rights will violated by passing of the current SOPA AND PIPA under consideration by the US House of Representatives and Senate, respectively.

A Tale of Two Systems

The base salary of US representatives/senators is about $14,500 per month. One of the typical health plans they may choose is Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Their premium is about $430 per month, which is about 3% of their salary. This includes family coverage.

The average Social Security recipient receives $1177 per month. Their cost for Medicare Part B is about $100 per month, which is about 8% of their monthly income from Social Security. This is single coverage.

First Snow

first snow - 2012We had our first snowfall of the year yesterday.  It didn’t amount to much, but in this area it doesn’t take much snow to wreak havoc with the normal flow of things.

Many people here in the Washington, DC Metro area are originally from parts of the country that typically have substantial snowfalls each year.  However, it seems that once they arrive here, they immediately lose their ability to drive when snow is falling, no matter how sparse the resulting ground cover may be.
