What to Do?

I happen to live in the “Commonwealth” of Virginia, which will be electing a New Governor next Tuesday.

As usual, the frequency of TV spots, Internet social media blather, junk mail etc. for each candidate seems to increase exponentially this last week leading up to the election.  In addition to the standard differences on taxes, employment, the economy, etc., two “Attack Ads” have gotten a lot of exposure on TV and in the media:

  • One candidate claims our commonwealth will be overrun by the evil MS-13 if his opponent is elected.  His reasoning behind this is that his opponent will allow creation of “Sanctuary Cities” that will foster growth of gangs such as MS-13.
  • A video produced by a group supporting the other candidate implies that election of his opponent will result in Marauding White Supremacists in Pickup Trucks flying the Confederate Battle Flag running down children from ethnic groups that they deem a threat to God and Country.

I wonder how many prospective voters actually believe that either of these outcomes will indeed come to pass during the administration of the winning candidate?

The State Bat?

Virgina, like other states in the U.S., has an official State Bird, State Flower, State Tree, etc. I wonder how many other states also have an official “State Bat?”

va_state_bat.jpgThe Virginia big-eared bat is a medium-sized bat, about 3.5 – 4 inches long. It’s characteristic features are the large ears (more than one inch long) and the presence of two large lumps (glands) on the muzzle. Their color ranges from pale to dark brown on the back and light brown underneath and found exclusively in limestone caves of Highland, Bland and Tazewell counties. With a lifespan of about 16 years, the Virginia big-eared bats are designated as state and federally endangered mainly due to their small population and limited habitat and distribution.
